Don’t be scared to start a Smart Home, be Smart!
Smart Homes & Devices may be new to you, but Smart Homes and Devices have been around for decades. Smart Home technology platforms have matured greatly over the last five years. This is because there are large trusted companies such as Apple, Google and Amazon. These companies have matured their Smart Home platforms far more than any other companies.
From our experience, Apple has the most secure Smart Home platform. This is because all of the information on their Smart Home platform is encrypted end to end. This may sound complex and not have any meaning, however this is very beneficial to you because it makes all communications to and from your smart home and smart devices secure and safe from being compromised by hackers. Regular software updates also help to ensure that your Smart Home and Smart Devices are safe and secure. Don’t let technology prevent you from starting a Smart Home and don’t think that you have to start your Smart Home “all or nothing”. Our recommendation is to start small, but start with a plan. See “Start Small, but start with a plan!” blog for more details on that topic.
Start with the smart devices in your Smart Home that will make the most benefit to you. That may be cost savings or easy access to your front door (when you forget your key or need to let a Service Professional in). If you rent a house as an investment property, the ability to have guests check-in directly via a Smart Door Lock to your property is one of the biggest benefits that that you can add to your smart home. So, your Smart Home can be started as simple as having a Smart Home Hub and a Smart Lock and maybe a Smart Thermostat. If you start Smart, and select a few devices that all support one Smart Home Platform (Apple, Google or Amazon) you will be able to monitor and manage all of these Smart Devices within one single app that is provided for free by your Smart Home platform provider i.e. Apple, Google or Amazon.
This lets you start a smart home that gives you the most benefits now, but also gives you the capability of adding other individual smart devices to your smart home as you become more comfortable with your smart home. For example, you could add lights, ceiling fans, exterior lights exterior security cameras, a garage door opener, a smoke detector to your Smart Home. So, how do you select the right Smart Home ecosystem? Well, the simple answer to this question is to begin with the Smart Phone/Tablet that you use everyday. If you use Apple Smart Phone/Tablet, the best thing you can do is to use an platform.
